In South Africa, gun violence is a major crisis, fuelled by illegal firearms, gang activity, and a lack of enforced gun control. Shootings have become a daily event, even in spaces meant for children; last year alone, 300 children were shot by stray bullets. To expose this horrific reality, we partnered with Gun Free SA, launching an outrageous solution to a very real problem: the world’s first Bullet Proof Park. Bullet Proof Park is the only play area ever to be fully encased in Level 8 bullet-resistant glass – offering all the fun of a regular playground, but ‘designed’ to keep the children who play in it not just entertained, but alive. Additional security measures include biometric access, panic buttons, and 24/7 camera surveillance.
By presenting this imagined park as a genuine proposition, we successfully sparked international outrage: a necessary shock designed to force the issue into the global spotlight. The campaign reached 99M people, generating R12M+ in earned media. Public interest increased by 700%. Most importantly, it pushed gun reform onto the agenda of the President’s State of the Nation Address. The Bullet Proof Park stands as testament to how creativity has the power to drive real change at the highest level.
